Chewy Idea

'Passengers', the sci-fi drama with Keanu Reeves, may have lost its female lead (Rachel McAdams) and its distributor (TWC) but it still sounds like it would be a great flick. This story feels like a blend of Saturday morning TV fun and 70s movie of the week cheesiness, with a pinch of Alien-esque intrigue.

Written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, The Mummy) the plot follows a guy who comes out of hibernation early during a century-long space voyage. Here's the synopsis that ran in THR when the project was announced in 2010:

Set in the future, "Passengers" centers on Jim Preston (Reeves), a mechanic on a 120-year journey to a distant colonized planet in another galaxy, who becomes the first traveler to experience pod hibernation failure. Having woken up 100 years too soon, he is stranded in the world of an interstellar spaceship with only robots and androids for companionship.

A year into his journey, he decides to wake up a fellow passenger, a beautiful journalist named Aurora. They fall in love but must soon deal not only with the revelation of Jim's misjudged act of waking her but a major malfunction of the ship itself.

While the news may center around production snags, all the comments online are about how good that pitch is. People love it, so do I.

Hope they work it out. Would buy this movie in a second.
