Another web series. This one, based on a comic book, is from Machinima, which is becoming a leader in web-based miniseries. Production value has always been the weakness, but 'Enormous' looks pretty good in that regard. Story has also been a soft spot for these but this one is written by Andre Ovredal, writer and director of 'Troll Hunter' so there may be more depth here.
I don't know what you get per play from advertisements on YouTube videos but, even if it's only a few cents, considering some can reach a million or more plays, there's money to be made.
This stuff was ignored at one time, then made fun of, but now I'm not seeing any real difference between this and features that roll out in theaters (except lower risk up front, lower ad costs, no need for an additional distribution mechanism other than the internet which is free, lower production costs, lower VFX costs, and the ability to pull the plug overnight if it doesn't pan out without anybody losing their home). Plus, there's more willingness to take creative chances on web-distributed material.
It's win-win unless, of course, you're angling for an Oscar. But, that will change in due time.
