The 'Veronica Mars' Crowd-Sourcing Thing

Very curious to see how this does. If a movie financed by Kickstarter succeeds you have to wonder what's next.

Never saw the show but the clips (below) have that voice-over drone that puts me to sleep fast, as does the clunky exposition, glaring-obvious-yet-polite jokes, and overdone facial expressions that I love so much (Like, I'm being sarcastic in case you couldn't tell).

In his SXSW review, Drew Taylor says the movie "...fundamentally maintains the heart and intrigue of the television series, but in a miniaturized, less nuanced form." Can't argue with that. Less nuanced you won't find.

At Variety, Justin Chang seems inclined to agree, saying "...the film doesn’t even attempt to match the sprawling narrative density that made the series' first season in particular so compelling."

So, a bit coarser and without the same hook as the TV show -- got it. Still, I'm looking forward to box office numbers (opens 3/14).

Seems to me that running ideas up the flagpole on Kickstarter before starting production is a good idea for properties that don't come pre-sold. It has to be prudent to put up some storyboards, or a graphic novel, or just throw the idea for your movie up somewhere before gambling on a production and ads only to find out on the back end nobody cares.

I can't help wonder what the response on Kickstarter might have been for 'The Lone Ranger'. Not that Disney would stoop to such a level. They end up taking the write off(s) though, quite publicly, so would they really lose face pitching ideas on a crowd-sourcing site?

If 'Veronica Mars' is even a modest success we might see a shift in the way movies are financed, which is overdue if you ask me.
