Still Loving It

Takeshi Kitano's 'Beyond Outrage' looks so slick. It's violent, extremely so, but doesn't come off labored or seem calculated to impress. The camera is stylized but is infused with elegance and doesn't feel like a bag of tricks. Deeper than that, there seems to be real soul here. Highly subjective I'll admit, but I sense a heartfelt quality to the acting that's rare and endearing.

'Beyond Outrage' is the kind of movie that's engaging whether the scene centers on a highly imaginative and brutal killing, or is simply about two people talking. Good writing, good directing.

Looking like a very rewarding movie. In limited US release 1/3/14.

Violent, Cool, But With A Depth

Can't help but admire how this trailer plays. It doesn't have that quality you see so often in ultra-violent movies -- that superficial vibe when the actors know it's just about the gore.

There's a stillness, almost a meditative and heartfelt quality.
