Kasi Lemmons Delivers

'Black Nativity' has the look only a top-tier director, who gets deeply felt and intelligent performances from her actors, can produce, and Kasi Lemmons is certainly on that level. This movie could be very rewarding.

Kasi Lemmons' 'Black Nativity'

I'm not sure why Kasi Lemmons doesn't (write and) direct more movies. Her debut feature, 'Eve's Bayou' (1997, with Samuel L. Jackson) is truly impressive. That it was not nominated for an Academy Award pissed me off. I think that was the year I realized I didn't much care anymore for the Oscars. I haven't much since.

In his review, Roger Ebert wrote:

All of these moments unfold in a film of astonishing maturity and confidence; "Eve's Bayou," one of the very best films of the year, is the debut of its writer and director, Kasi Lemmons.

'Black Nativity' is based on the play by Langston Hughes. There's a tight energy and Lemmons' adept touch shows through. I'm not one for musicals, but I'll check this out.
