Musicals, or dramas with musical elements, usually pander to the easiest emotions to elicit from an audience, and I watch trailers for them guardedly, pessimistically. While I don't want to like this movie, while I'm looking for that moment of cheesy acting or clunky line of dialogue, every second of 'Beyond the Lights' feels real, gets to me.

Written and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who I feel I can trust.
