Character-Centric Psych-Horror, Or Superficial Gore-Fest?
Neither this poster nor the trailer have the typical horror vibe. This has more of a 'based on a true story' feel and, clearly, references the Jonestown massacre but the plot's framework includes plenty room for any type of psychosis to manifest itself.
Horror director Ti West is capable of capturing whatever tone fits the project. He can go full shock/gore as in his segments from 'The ABCs of Death' and 'V/H/S', not to mention 'The House of the Devil', but he also creates an atmospheric suspenseful tone when needed, like in 'The Innkeepers'.
While the movie feels rooted in reality, considering it's 'presented by' Eli Roth (Hostel), 'The Sacrament' could get pretty graphic. I'm betting on a fairly well done edgy character study as a set up, followed by some fairly relentless blood letting.
Either aspect could go either way. In order to snag good word of mouth from horror fans the slasher elements will have to deliver while the set up may be little more than procedural. However, if the character-centric exposition is done well 'The Sacrament' may appeal to a broader audience. Even if it isn't considered mainstream it may be must-see for horror fans of all stripes.
This has all the markings of my favorite genre: psych-horror. Lots of potential.
