When Style Is The Substance

Is noir worth revisiting decades after it went out of fashion? Watching this I'd have to say yes but with reservations. I doubt this story will have a spine, but what difference would that make. This is a movie you could watch with the sound off and it would still be just as good and, whether that's a good or bad thing has yet to be determined.

The people who will turn out for this already know who they are and, really, didn't need to see a trailer to be persuaded. The rest have little to think about. If ultra-noir lighting, growly icy dialogue, sharp camera angles, squinting tough guys chewing on smoke, and people getting beat up and/or killed in a wild variety of ways doesn't appeal to you it's simple -- don't go see the movie because, barring a screenplay miracle, that's about all you can expect here.

That being said, this flick looks to be eye candy of the highest order. 'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For' isn't style over substance, it's style as substance, and that has to be worked into the equation before you buy a ticket.

In the meantime, I'm waiting for that screenplay miracle.
